One Letter Difference between Networking and Not Working

Networking and Not WorkingThere may be only one letter difference between Networking and Not Working, but the action of Networking or lack of action is what will determine how long your job search will take.

Of course there are a lot of things that will impact your over all job hunt journey, but statistics show that Networking – virtual or in person – will shorten your job hunt and has a 80% success rate.

Applying online

If you only use the online application tactic, your chances of getting a job is only 5%.  Sticking to applying for jobs online will only prolong your job hunt.  Do not spend 80% of your time applying online when this tactic has such a low success rate.

This does not mean you should ignore this tactic, but use it to your advantage.  If you see a job advertised, check your LinkedIn network to see if you have any connections into the company. Leverage those connections to find and get in front of the hiring manager.  If you cannot network into the hiring manager, consider how you can network into the job poster inside Human Resources.  Some companies, you may not be able to access the hiring manager and have to go through HR.  Still use your network to make contact with the Human Resources person responsible for the position you are seeking. That way when you apply online, your application should be flagged for review.

Hidden Job Market

Have you heard about the Hidden Job Market? Up to 80% of all open positions are never advertised.  If you are not networking you will never hear about these positions.

Sure, getting out of your comfort zone might be hard, but if you don’t start taking advantage of the many Free and low cost networking opportunities in the Omaha area, you will be looking a very long period of time looking for work. Don’t go alone, have a friend go with you if it helps.

Some networking opportunities:

  1. Chambers
  2. Business Groups
  3. Monthly SBA Empowerment Breakfast

  5. Coffee Shops
  6. Grocery Stores
  7. Shopping Malls
